Ferrosilicon

Ferrosilicon is made from coke, steel scraps, and quartz (or silica) smelted in an electric furnace. Since silicon and oxygen are easily synthesized into silicon dioxide, ferrosilicon is often used as deoxidizer in steelmaking. The large amount of heat generated in this reaction can increase the temperature of molten steel. Besides, ferrosilicon can also be used as an alloying element additive in the production of low-alloy structural steel, spring steel, bearing steel, heat-resistant steel and electrical silicon steel. Ferrosilicon is often used as a reducing agent in ferroalloy production and chemical industry.

Product Usage

Ferrosilicon is an essential deoxidizer in steelmaking for precipitation deoxidation and diffusion deoxidation. Ferrosilicon is also used as an alloying agent in steelmaking. Adding a certain amount of silicon to the steel can make it much stronger, stiffer and more elastic, increase its magnetic permeability and reduce the magnetic hysteresis loss of the transformer steel. Ferrosilicon can be used as inoculant of nodular cast iron, for it prevents the formation of carbides and promotes the precipitation and spheroidization of graphite to improve the properties of cast iron. Ferrosilicon powder can be used as a suspended phase in the beneficiation industry and as a coating for welding rods in the welding rod manufacturing industry.
